Reading: 2 Peter 2:1-22

Last Wednesday, Pastor Ken Hauge was guiding the Midweek Pastor’s Bible Study through the second chapter in 2 Peter when he asked, “Do you think Peter is being over the top, too harsh of the people?” After class, two members suggested I share. This week’s devotion I share the following for your consideration. Next week, we will return to our normal progression through the Bible.
As humans, we often think of judgement day as a far-off event. We are remarkably busy living day to day that sharing the good news with those we encounter does not seem time sensitive. In our text Peter is enthusiastic about sharing the good news of Jesus. He has a sense of urgency in his message.
On May 23rd, this year I suddenly, without any warning, came as close to eternity/judgement day as I ever want to experience. The car suddenly appeared in my vision while I rode my motorcycle and proceeded, as one witness shared later, to “drive over me.” Marjorie and I later learned that the trauma team did not expect me to survive. My judgement day almost came as a “thief in the night.” No second chance. No opportunity to delay until tomorrow.
John 9:4 tells us, “As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming when no one can work.” I need to ask myself; do I have the passion of Peter to share the Good News with those who live near me, those who I work with, those who are in my family.

Holy God, fill me each day with the passion to serve you in all that I do. Amen.
