Reading: 1 Samuel 17 Optional Reading: Samuel 18 - 20
39 David fastened his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. “I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So, he took them off.” (1 Samuel 17:39 NIV)
I remember a long time ago a short story about how Billy picked up his father’s baseball glove. It was great helping his dad catch a softball on the softball team.  But it was too big for Billy. “It is too big, Dad,” Billy said. “I am not used to catching with it.” He grabbed his own glove, worn and used, but also something he knew well. “I’d rather use this one if it is OK with you.”
Using equipment, or in our story today, “weapons” we are used to help us. When we pick up tools we have never tried before, we are in danger. In the Bible story, David wanted to fight Goliath. King Saul gave David his armor and sword. But when David put it on, he found it was far too big. David picked up his slingshot and told everyone he was used to that, and that was what he would fight Goliath with.
In your spiritual life, employ “tools” that you know how to use. Learn what the Bible says. Learn to use a concordance, Bible dictionary, Bible encyclopedia, attend Sunday School, or ask your Sunday School teacher to help you understand the Bible. Grow in knowledge and faith as you practice using God’s Word.
Jesus, help me to work with the tools you have given me. Amen.
