“Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.” [Job 1:9-11 NIV]
Satan wanted to hurt Job. He hated the man of God. He believed that if terrible things started happening to Job, the believer would reject God and curse him to his face. God decided to allow a little test. Was Satan, right? Would Job turn on God if things went badly?
Satan attacked. Job lost his donkeys, his camels, his sheep, and his children. Satan stole them or killed them all. What did Job do? He did not curse God. He fell to his knees and cried out, “The Lord gave me everything and the Lord has taken it away. Praise the name of the Lord!”
That is an amazing response! How could Job do this? One reason is, Job really loved God and understood how God works in the world. Nothing he had was really his. It was all on loan till Job died, and then God would pass it on to someone else.
How do you feel when things go wrong in your life? Could Satan be attacking you? It is possible. The important thing is that you trust God and turn to him, even when you think he has hurt you. God would never hurt you so that you lost your faith. But God will test you at times.
When you face difficult circumstances, how will you respond to God?
Lord, help me to pass the test. When things are difficult let me trust in you. Amen.
