Reading: Easter 6 Optional Reading: Esther 5, 7
“That night the king could not sleep; so, he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him.” [Esther 6:1 NIV]
Esther had little hope that she could win this battle alone. A man named Haman, powerful in the Persian kingdom, had talked the king into making a law to annihilate the Jews. Esther was Jewish. She was also the queen. She approached the king in his court chamber. She invited him to a little lunch. She did not know what she would do, but she believed God would give her something.
God did. Before the fated lunch, the king could not sleep one night. To help him become drowsy, he asked that the court records be read to him. The reader selected a passage about the deeds of Mordecai, a Jew. Mordecai had given the king a warning about a plot against his life. The plot was foiled, but was Mordecai ever rewarded? There was no record.
Over the next few days things happened in succession. Haman became the object of rejection and execution. God had worked events so that Queen Esther, her uncle Mordecai, and the Jews were saved.
When God works in human events to make things go a certain way, we call it God’s providence. God continually leads events for his own purposes. He does that for every Christian too.
Do you trust God to work as things happen around you? Do you look to him for help? As we continue our search for a Pastor, Director Christian Education, and Organist, do you trust that He will provide the right person at the right time? He will work, and he will help you and our congregation . . . always.
Lord, help me to trust that you know what you are doing in my life. Amen.
