“22 Josiah, however, would not turn away from him, but disguised himself to engage him in battle. He would not listen to what Necho had said at God's command but went to fight him on the plain of Megiddo.” [2 Chronicles 35:22 NIV]
Does God ever speak through unbelievers? Can we ever listen to something said by a person who does not trust Jesus? Of course. All truth is God’s truth, whether it comes from the Bible, a believer, or an unbeliever. HOWEVER, beware of trusting too much in those who do not love Jesus. Sometimes they will give you the right advice. At other times, run.
In this Bible story, Pharaoh Neco told King Josiah that God had spoken to him. God told Neco to fight against another king, an ally of Josiah. Neco tried to warn Josiah to go home. Josiah would not listen.
How could Josiah have trusted Neco’s message? How could he have confirmed that God had really spoken to Neco? Simply through prayer, consultation with a prophet or priest, or other spiritual means.
When an unbeliever gives you advice he says is from God, be careful. It could be right, but it might not. How you can find out is simple: ask God yourself. Pray about it. Seek the wisdom and guidance of the Bible and listen to your Christian friends.
God sometimes uses unbelievers to speak to us. Do not automatically say they are wrong. Seek the advice of others. Go to God himself. He will answer you somehow.
Lord, may I aways listen to your truth, no matter what the source. Amen.
