“As soon as the order went out, the Israelites generously gave the first fruits of their grain, new wine, olive oil and honey and all that the fields produced. They brought a great amount, a tithe of everything.” [2 Chronicles 31:5 NIV]
During the Halloween season, every year Redeemer hosts Trunk or Treat, and our children gather a bag full of candy. We encourage the children to donate ten percent of their candy to other children who could not go out and trick or treat. I imagine the following conversation happens with most children . . . as it does with all of us as adults on our gifts from God.
David stared at the candy in his bag. Look at all the candy: Skittles, Jolly Rancher, Milk Duds, Baby Ruth, M&Ms, and best of all, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. I can stretch all this out and enjoy it for weeks. I even got more than my older sisters. The church wants me to give ten percent of my candy . . . my candy. I worked hard for that candy, and I deserve that candy. But God has been good to me, and I want to do what is right.
That Sunday at church I was still struggling with giving up my candy. When the time came, I took my candy up and placed it in the box. As I watched the box fill up a sudden shot of joy filled my heart. I gave the most candy I ever had in church. It felt good. I felt like I had pleased the Lord.
Giving with a cheerful, happy heart is the kind of giving God loves. Giving of your time, talents, and treasures. Is that the way you give? If not, time to change your attitude?
Jesus, teach me to give with a cheerful heart. Amen.
