Optional Reading: 1 Chronicles 10, 12-14

“17 David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” 18 So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD.” [1 Chronicles 11:17,18 NIV]

When a football team wins the big game, the teammates carry the coach out on their shoulders. Or when a smart student gets perfect grades, they win awards. Or when a wise person makes a great speech, we give them applause. What did David do when three of his men did something incredible?

In our reading this week, David, before he was king, often fought the Philistines. One day he commented how he would love to drink water from the well in his hometown. Three men were listening. So, they barged right into enemy territory and took the water from under the Philistines’ noses.

When they returned to camp, David was astounded. He congratulated the men on their courage and love. But then he did something that would seem very strange to us but was perfect. He poured out the water as an offering to the Lord.

When someone does something well, what is the right response? Congratulate them, yes. Give them awards, sure. But first, thank God who made it possible. That is why if you feel led to congratulate someone in church for a message or performance, recognize that when you clap, you are giving thanks to God who made it possible.

Lord, may I always remember you are the one to praise. Amen.
