“Then David assigned some of the Levites to the Chest of God to lead worship: to intercede, give thanks, and praise the God of Israel.” [1 Chronicles 16:4 MSG]

How should we pray? What should we pray about? King David told the priests to pray in three specific ways.

First, to intercede means to act or intervene on behalf of someone in difficulty or trouble, or to try to reconcile differences between two parties, to bring requests to the Lord. For example, “Jesus, please do such and such for so and so.” Or “Lord, help me study well for the test tomorrow.”

Secondly, give thanks to the Lord. You thank God for answering your prayers. You thank him for helping you. You thank him for being your friend. It is not hard at all. God has done something good in your life. You thank him, just like your parents taught you.

Finally, praise is when you let God know how great you think he is. “Lord, I give you praise for your love. I could not live without it.” Or “Father, praise you for being the great God of the universe. You are the best.” Praise is the highest form of prayer because we give God our love and adoration.

Do you use all three elements in your prayer life? Try it today. After you make a request, thank him. And after you thank him, praise him. It is a simple, and good pattern to follow.

Jesus, please make my prayer life blossom. I want to learn to pray well. Amen.
